Connecting people from all walks of life to freely share their knowledge and skills.
Located in Portland, Oregon, the free school is dedicated to social change through free education and community building. We believe that education is an ever-evolving process that should be available to all, free of monetary value. We wish to break down the boundaries of identity to learn together in a nurturing and creative environment.
Who we are
The free school is not an organization but a network. We are a grassroots effort, a group of volunteers acting collectively and autonomously to create a skill-sharing network, a school without institutional control. In this manner we educate ourselves horizontally rather than through hierarchy.
Get to know us better by looking at a list of participants or check out the frequently asked questions.
We do have a working group that meets to produce the calendar and maintain the website. They are always looking for more help.
Where we are
We are happy to now begin working out of the CommUnity Arts Garage, a hub for skill-sharing in North East Portland at 3969 NE Rodney Ave (off Shaver). The Garage is available for holding classes, and you can also check out our resources page for other possible locations.

Our class guidelines describe what we mean be "free" and the responsibilities expected of class facilitators. We have also received a bit of coverage in the media
